Welcome back 5th graders. This is Mr. Kowalski's website where you will find information that might be helpful in improving your math grade this year. As opposed to the last couple of years, I will try to update this page at least once a week. On it, I will post videos that can help you to solve problems, examples of problems you may see or once you need to solve, test preparation (what is on the tests, what to focus on, etc.) as well as other useful pieces of information.
This year you are going to be learning a lot of new things, as well as expanding on the topics that you learned last year. In fifth grade you will be learning fractions, decimals, exponents, coordinates, among other things.
This year's rubric will be as such:
This year you are going to be learning a lot of new things, as well as expanding on the topics that you learned last year. In fifth grade you will be learning fractions, decimals, exponents, coordinates, among other things.
This year's rubric will be as such:
- Behavior: 2 points every day. - this is the easiest 2 points you can possibly earn. Don't fool around and you are raising your grade.
- Homework: 10 points each. Depending on how we do in class will determine how much homework you are going to get. You will have about 2-3 homework assignments each week. Completing the homework is going to give you 5 points, the other 5 will be on effort/showing work/correct answers. Homework that is not turned in on time will receive a 0. If you turn in your homework late, you can earn up to a 5, but I will not remind you.
- Quizzes: 20 points each. I am going to try to give you quizzes every couple of weeks, based on what topics we have gone over. Word of advice: use your binders to study (hint)
- Tests: 30 points each. Tests are usually given after completing an entire section. You may have 1 or 2 each quarter. Tests are free to cover everything you have learned so far that year. Tests can be corrected for points back on your test.
- Sprints: 5 points each. Every couple days we will have sprints on how quickly you can answer questions. Nobody is expected to be able to answer all of them but are expected to try so I can see your progress. You will not be graded on completion or correctness but instead on effort.
- Extra Credit: I will be offering extra credit opportunities throughout the year. These can be in the form of Questions of the Day, extra credit worksheets, among other things. Pay attention for extra credit opportunities. They will have deadlines.
- Projects: 10 points. We may have projects, we may not. It will depend on how quickly we go through the material and what topics we are on.
